I have received warnings regarding disk space, what should I do?

Using our web hosting accounts, you get access to varying amounts of storage space (depending on account type). This space is shared between email, websites, databases, and other files. If the web hosting account itself or an email account on it is running out of disk space, and email regarding this will be sent to the account owner.

The email address the notification is sent to is determined by what address is entered as a contact address under cPanel. If you notice that you should receive such notifications (but haven’t), please check the settings regarding notifications from cPanel. Notifications regarding disk quota may be turned off.

Web hosting account

If the disk space for a web hosting account is about to run out, an email message similar to the following is sent to the account owner:

Disk quota notification for “exempel”.

The user “exempel” (exempel.se) has reached their disk quota.

The account currently uses 100% (30GB/30GB) of its disk capacity.

The account currently has 16,892 files.

Remove some files from this account, or increase the account’s disk quota.

The email will mention how much disk space on the account that is being used, and notifications will be sent out once 80%, 90%, and 98% of the available space is utilised. It’s a good idea to act when the first email regarding space running out is received, since a web hosting account with no space left can cause a plethora of errors. Email accounts can stop working, websites may begin to act strange, and so on.

Find out what uses the most disk space

If you receive warnings about your web hosting account’s disk space beginning to run out, it’s a good idea to investigate what uses that space. The following instructions tells you details about how to do this. It may be down to log files that has grown out of proportion, or backups you’ve configured yourself. Regarding backups, keep in mind that we take automated backups of all web hosting accounts via Acronis. These backups use no space on your account.

Upgrade your account if you are unable to remove data

If you cannot find data to remove from your web hosting account according to the instructions above, you can always upgrade the account. If you currently use a Standard account, it has 30 GB disk space. If you upgrade it to a Premium account, you’ll get a total of 50 GB available, and also additional system resources (which can make your websites load quicker etc). If you’re happy with the performance of your account as is, you can instead upgrade to a Large version of the current package (i.e. from Standard to Standard Large). This will give the account an additional 100 GB disk space (so you’ll have 130 GB in total). You can read more about the differences between our various web hosting accounts here. It’s also possible to add additional Large upgrades to the same account, i.e. Large 2x, Large 3x, and so on.

Email account

If the disk space for an email account is about to run out, an email message similar to the following is sent to the web hosting account owner:

Mailbox quota notification for “hejsan@exempel.se”.

The “hejsan@exempel.se” email account is nearly full.

The email account currently uses 81.65% (204.13 MB/250 MB) of its capacity.

You should remove some emails from the mailbox as soon as possible in order to prevent the loss of any future email. Use the Email Disk Usage tool, or ask the system administrator to upgrade your account to a larger quota.

Warnings will be sent out when the email account reaches 80% of its quota. New notifications will then be sent at 90% and 98% (in the same manner as for web hosting accounts). If the email account becomes completely full, it’ll be unable to receive additional email messages. Sent messages may not be saved either. It’s therefore a good idea to solve the problem as soon as the disk usage notifications show up.

Delete old email messages

One way to solve this is to delete messages from an email account that is running out of space. This can either be done via an email client or via the webmail, or you can use the tool available via cPanel for this. We’ve written about the tool here. Keep in mind that the tool is rather blunt and only take into consideration the age or size of the messages, so please be careful when you use it.

Increase the quota for the email account

Another solution would be to simply assign a larger quota to the email account.
