How do I set up a temporary domain on my web hosting account?

On our web hosting accounts, a temporary domain is normally set up when the account is created. This temporary domain is based on the main domain (the one entered when the account was ordered), and ends with “.hemsida.eu”. This means that if you order an account using exempel.se as main domain, it will have the domain exempel.se.hemsida.eu added automatically from the beginning. It is added as an alias on the account, and can be deleted whenever you want.

This domain can be used to access the content of the web hosting account before the “real” domain has been pointed towards the account.

In the same way as this alias has been created automatically, you yourself may add temporary domains to the account (e.g. if you want to test a website you’ve built on the account before pointing the domain). This is an alternative to pointing a domain locally towards the account.

To add a temporary domain to your account, follow these instructions regarding how to add an addon domain to the web hosting account. Take special care to set the document root to the same path as you’ve chosen for the “real” domain. Remember to end the temporary domain with “.hemsida.eu”.

If you’re uncertain what folder the “real” domain is using, you can find out by following these instructions. If it’s the main domain you want to create a temporary domain for, it always points at the public_html folder.

So if you’ve added the domain domain.com to your account and selected /domains/domain.com as document root for it, you can create domain.com.hemsida.eu and set the same folder as its document root to reach the website located in that folder.

Keep in mind that WordPress is rather strict when it comes to what domain name it uses. It’s possible that you will be redirected to exempel.se when you try accessing the site via exempel.se.hemsida.eu. If so, you have to change the domain name the WordPress installation uses, which we’ve written about here.
