How do I clone a website using Softaculous?

We will use WordPress as an example in this guide, but the same method works for a number of pieces of software that can be installed via our one-click installer Softaculous.

It is not possible to use the cloning feature in Softaculous if your site uses a database with a hyphen (-) in the database name.

This guide shows you how to clone your current website for purposes such as development.

  1. Begin by logging on to cPanel.
  2. If you want to clone the website to a subdomain such as copy.exempel.se, you first need to create a subdomain. If you want to clone the website to another domain instead, you need to add it as an add-on domain.
  3. Click the icon Softaculous Apps Installer under Software.
  4. Click on the All Installations icon. Make sure the website you want to clone is visible in the list, if it is not, you need to import it first.
  5. In the list, find the website you want to clone, then click Clone to the right.
  6. Now choose the domain you want to clone the website to under Choose Domain.Detaljer inför kloning
  7. Then click on Clone Installation further down the page.

Remember that the database details for the installation in Softaculous must match those in the site’s settings file (wp-config.php for WordPress), otherwise the cloning will not be complete.

Cloning a website can take a while, depending on its size. Do not close the window while the cloning is in progress!
