What types of certificates are there?
There are three different types of SSL/TLS certificates.
DV – Domain Validated
This level of validation checks that you have control over the domain name you want to get a certificate for. This can be done by you uploading a file to the domain name that then is accessible over the internet. The certificate authority can download that file and that will verify to them that you have control over the domain name. They can also send you an email with a link that you have to click on to verify that you have control over the domain name.
OV – Organization Validated
This level of validation also checks that the company that owns the domain name also is the company that is requesting the certificate. This certificate also displays your company information in the certificate.
EV – Extended Validation
This is the highest level of validation. In addition to the checks performed for a DV certificate the certificate authority also calls the company and checks public registers to verify that the company owns the domain name and that they are who they say they are.
What certificates does Oderland offer?
You can see all the certificates we offer on this page.
If there is a specific certificate you want from Thawte, Geotrust, Comodo or Certum we can still offer it even though it isn’t listed on our website. Just contact us and we will get back to you with a price.
We also offer free SSL certificates from Lets Encrypt!
What type of certificate should I use?
We offer free SSL certificates from Lets Encrypt (DV) if you have a web hosting account with us. That type of certificate is fine for the majority of users. If you for instance have a VPS with us or need a certificate for a service you have with another provider we usually recommend a Comodo PositiveSSL certificate (DV).
If you need a certificate that also includes all the sub domains on your domain name we recommend a Comodo PositiveSSL wildcard certificate (DV).
We also offer multi domain certificates. Multi domain certificates allow you to include multiple domains in one certificate. That way if you for example have five different domains where you want to use SSL/TLS you don’t have to buy five Comodo PositiveSSL certificates, you can instead buy one multi domain certificate.
