A CDN is a network of interconnected servers spread out around the world. A website can upload files to those servers, for example static resources (such as images, CSS files, etc).
The benefit of this is most notable if you expect visitors from different parts of the world. Depending on how the CDN service is configured, resources on your website may be loaded from servers located geographically closer to the visitors. For instance, if you have a website set up on our web hosting servers, which are located in Sweden, and see many visitors from the US, the CDN can provide files from servers also located in the US. This will make your website load quicker for those visitors (since the files will have a shorter path to travel across the web).
This also means that if you have a web hosting account on our servers and mainly expect visitors from Sweden and the other nordic countries, they will not see a notable difference if you use a CDN. In fact, your visitors may even experience longer loading times, since their web browsers will need to establish connections to additional servers instead of loading all data from a single source.
To summarise, is CDN required for a website hosted on ODERLAND’s servers?
- Do you mainly expect visitors from – or geographically close to – Sweden? No.
- Do you expect visitors from various parts of the world? Yes, maybe.
