How do I change the password on an FTP account?

Sometimes you may want to change the password of your FTP account. Since you may connect with two different account types when using FTP, this guide will describe how you change passwords for both variants.

If you wish to create a new FTP account, follow these instructions.

If you use your cPanel account for FTP access

If you use the login credentials for your web hosting account (i.e. your cPanel username) when connecting to FTP, you can set a new password for both cPanel and FTP at once by following these instructions.

If you have created separate FTP accounts

If you have set up separate FTP accounts, you can change their passwords via cPanel for your web hosting account. Follow these steps to set a new password for an FTP account.

  1. Begin by logging on to cPanel.
  2. Click the icon FTP Accounts under Files.
  3. Scroll down until you see the FTP Accounts table listing the accounts that has been created on your web hosting account. On each row for these accounts, you will find a button to Change Password. Click the button on the row for the account for which you wish to set a new password.
  4. In the form that appears, enter your new password twice. Make sure that the strength gauge fills up as much as possible. You may also let cPanel generate a password for you by using the Password Generator button. Once you’ve selected the new password, save by clicking Change Password.

Avoid the following characters in your password, as they may cause problems:
Å Ä Ö å ä ö ¤ ½ § £ € ¨ ; & @
